Saint Philips Chapel Street has a rich history. The building was designed by Sir Robert Smirke, the architect of the British Museum, and remains a Grade II listed landmark. It has a twin at St Mary’s Bryanston Square in London. For nearly two centuries, this space has been a hub for worship, community, and creativity.
Today, Saint Philips Chapel Street is alive with mission and purpose. Planted in partnership with New Wine, the church seeks to:

Parts of our parish are among the top 10% most deprived in the UK, with ongoing challenges like child poverty, social isolation, and economic disadvantage.
Our 2026–2030 plan focuses on a place-based response in Salford, ensuring our work is deep, resilient, and sustainable. At the same time, we aim to support and resource other churches and plant new expressions of church in communities beyond our borders.
Through our model of Compassion, Connection, and Creativity, we are building a church that goes beyond Sunday services, a 24/7 engine of positive change transforming lives, strengthening communities, and bringing hope across Greater Manchester and beyond.
The Rector (Gareth Robinson, Rector and Church Leader) is responsible for leading the overall vision and direction of the church. The Parochial Church Council (PCC) looks after our governance. They make sure we follow through on our plans, care for our building, and keep everything is cared for and managed well.
The PCC acts like the trustee board of a charity and meets four times a year. Its executive group – the Standing Committee, made up of the Clergy, Church Wardens, Treasurer, and Secretary – meets monthly to handle ongoing leadership and decision-making.
The PCC is an elected group made up of people on the Church Electoral Roll. Anyone who has worshipped with us for six months or more can join the Church Electoral Roll. Being on the Church Electoral Roll allows you to vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting, where new PCC members are elected. The PCC representatives serve for three years, with a third of the council elected each year.
Our staff team works to put the church’s vision into action, under the leadership of our Rector, Gareth Robinson, and the governance of the PCC.
We’re all here to help every person in our church know God’s love and to encourage each one to step out in faith. The PCC’s vision is to step out in faith love and serve Jesus, one another, Greater Manchester, and beyond.
